Geno Luketicis from Xenia, OH and makes his wheel thrown forms on a treadlewheel. This green lidded pot measures approximatly 7.5"tall and is about 6.5"wide. A simple metal circle hangs from a redthread. Perfect for holding tea or trinkets. Geno waspart of the 2011 FineCraft Show .

ArtistStatement

I make wheelthrown forms on a treadle wheel. This slow, foot-powered wheelallows me to reflect as I work and lets the shapes I make groworganically and spontaneously. I use high temperature stonewareclay and glazes. Some surfaces are rubbed with local silt and woodash to give them a rich natural patina. Off the wheel the forms arealtered and lids are cut. I throw many hollow forms then approachthem each as a unique individual. The variations of string, lidshape and position combined with surface are infinite. The locallycollected materials establish a sense of place and through materiallink the piece forever to the earth near where they were created. Imake work of on intimate personal scale. Most fit comfortably inones hands and entice viewers to approach and engage the workthrough touch.

The daughter of a professor of ecology, Carolyn has spent her lifein the company of animals. After earning her B.S. inecological science, she spent many years working in, and thenmanaging, a veterinary hospital. Since 2006, Carolyn hasimmersed herself full-time in her art, celebrating theinterrelationship between humans and the creatures that surroundthem. Each of Carolyn's exquisitely sculpted pieces isfashioned by hand. Like the animals they portray, no two areexactly alike.

No one knows exactly how long the beech tree stood on thegrounds of the Memorial Art Gallery. For approximately 80years, its silhouette lengthened against the bricks of CutlerUnion. It braved snowstorms, sheltered picnics, and, for thelast ten years, it shaded Albert Paley's MillenniumBench. Eventually, however, environmental stressesproved too much for the tree, and it was decided it needed to comedown.

No one knowsexactly how long the beech tree stood on the grounds of theMemorial Art Gallery. For approximately 80 years, itssilhouette lengthened against the bricks of Cutler Union. Itbraved snowstorms, sheltered picnics, and, for the last ten years,it shaded Albert Paley's Millennium Bench. Eventually,however, environmental stresses proved too much for the tree, andit needed to come down. "It was a sad day for our departmentand the MAG," says University of Rochester Grounds Manager DanSchied.

Hearing thatwe were about to lose the old tree, Gallery Store manager ColleenGriffin-Underhill put in a call to local artist Scott Sober, askingif he was willing to make something from the trunk. Scottarrived on the big day, ready to load the enormous cross-sectionsof tree into his van.

Pictured is one of the beautiful bowls that Scott turned fromthe wood he took that day. Bowls vary by size anddesign. Please contact the Gallery Store for informationabout other bowls and items from our rescued beechwood.
